Event History

Motorcycle magazine editor Fred Rau was inspired in 1992 to draft an editorial in which he called for a national ride to work day.  The magazine was then called Road Rider but today is titled Motorcycle Consumer News.  The idea for the first ride to work day came from promotional materials such as T-shirts made by Aerostich Rider Wear.  The T-shirts’ message was “Work to Ride, Ride to Work.”

July 22, 1992, was the first ever Ride to Work Day.  The event experienced continued growth until, in the year 2000, Ride to Work, a non-profit group, was formed.  Their purpose was to organize and promote the event.  In 2008, the annual date for the event was changed to the third Monday in June.  Today, motorcyclists participate in the event worldwide.
