Government Report Indicates Motorcycle Accident Deaths, Injuries Cost $16 Billion
A new report issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that the annual cost of motorcycle accidents totals $16 billion. Though the direct costs from motorcycle accident-related fatalities and injuries totaled this amount, the full cost is likely higher to measure because long-term medical expenses are difficult to measure. The GAO findings, which were published in a November report for congressional committees, sourced data from various government agencies, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Interviews with industry organizations were also conducted and officials from 16 states were consulted for the study.
The $16 billion annual cost was tallied for motorcycles crashes from 2010, and approximately 95,000 motorcycle accidents occurred that year with 4,423 fatalities. The GAO report cites an NHTSA estimate that three-quarters of the costs of motorcycle crashes are born by society, and largely through medical and insurance payments. The report acknowledges several contributing factors to motorcycle collisions, such as alcohol, speeding, and rider training, but it does determine that universal helmet laws are the most effective means for lowering fatality rates.
The GAO report recommends that Congress offer more flexibility to states regarding the use of grant money given by the NHTSA, which is currently restricted to motorist awareness and motorcyclist training programs. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has, however, lobbied against the use of federal funds for safety efforts such as motorcycle-only checkpoints. The group also opposes universal helmet laws.
As this report indicates, motorcycle accidents have an extremely high cost for the rider, which is why it is essential that a motorcyclist injured due to the negligence of another person obtain compensation to help them recuperate.
