Motorcycle Safety

Riding a motorcycle offers an experience unlike that of driving a car; it provides for more maneuverability and a greater sense of freedom that sitting in a typical motor vehicle, but it also comes with additional risks. Taking the proper safety precautions is necessary in order to stay safe if you are riding on Texas roads, especially because drivers of cars don't always practice proper safety around motorcycles.

As a dedicated motorcycle crash lawyer in Austin and an experienced rider, Ray King of King Law Firm, cannot stress enough the importance of taking the proper safety measures when riding a motorcycle in Texas. While not all motorcycle accidents may be prevented, the more cautious you are, the better you can protect yourself and avoid hazardous situations. Please consider the following as a helpful guide on the steps you can take to ride as safely as possible.

What to Wear

Since a motorcycle does not provide you with the same protection as other motor vehicles, you have to protect your body more directly, with the proper clothing and gear. In the event of a motorcycle crash, it will be the only thing protecting you. The following is considered “proper” motorcycle clothing and protective gear:

  • Motorcycle jacket, made of leather, or other sturdy material. Denim does not count.
  • Long pants made of leather or other sturdy material. Again, denim does not count. Jeans will be torn to bits if you skid across the road.
  • Reinforced/armored gloves.
  • Boots that cover the ankle.
  • Full-face, DOT-approved helmet, regardless of Texas helmet laws. Brain injury is a real risk if you fall off your bike, as the result of an accident or otherwise. The “full-face” also protects your face and eyes from kicked-up debris.

Check Your Motorcycle

In addition to wearing the appropriate safety gear, you should also make sure your motorcycle is in proper working order before setting out, especially if you haven't ridden in a while. Take just a few minutes to check the oil and other fluids, the tires, and make sure all your lights and signals are working. If it sounds funny or feels funny, you should get it checked out by a mechanic before riding again.

While on the Road

Finally, while riding on Texas roads, be sure to drive defensively. The negligence of other drivers is the most common cause of motorcycle accidents, so you have to be prepared to safely maneuver out of a hazardous situation, like a car changing lanes into the space occupied by you. Additionally, make eye contact with car drivers as often as possible so that they know you are there. If need be, use your horn.

Other drivers aside, you should avoid driving in poor weather if you can help it. The increased maneuverability of a motorcycle can be a danger on slippery roads.

In the Event of a Motorcycle Crash

Unfortunately, even by doing all you can to ride safely, you cannot control the behavior of other drivers.
