NHTSA Data Reveals Increase in Motorcycle Accident Fatalities

By King Law Firm on January 7, 2013 - Comments off

According to a new analysis by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), highway deaths fell to 32,367 in 2011, which represents a 1.9 percent decrease from the previous year. This total marks the lowest level since 1949 and represents a 26 percent decline in traffic accident-related fatalities since 2005. The federal agency also found that the 2011 fatality rate was the lowest on record at 1.10 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. Overall, Americans drove fewer miles in 2011 than 2010, which may be a factor in the decline.

Accident-related deaths increased for motorcyclists, in addition to pedestrians, large truck occupants, and pedalcyclists. Though there was a significant reduction in the number of persons injured and fatalities, the increase in fatalities for other vehicles may serve as a reality check for those celebrating safety improvements.

The administrator for the NHTSA states that even as the progress that has been made in recent years is being celebrated, “we must remain focused on addressing the safety issues that are continuing to claim more than 30,000 lives each year.”

Motorcyclist Injured in Austin Crash

By King Law Firm on November 15, 2012 - Comments off

A 30-year-old man was seriously injured in a traffic accident when a car collided with his motorcycle. According to a news report in The American-Statesman, the Austin motorcycle accident occurred at Manchaca Road and Frate Barker Road. Officials have not released information regarding who was responsible for the crash or if either motorist failed to obey the traffic lights at the intersection. It does appear that the injured victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. He was critically injured and transported to a nearby medical center.

Since motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, drivers who are distracted, speeding, intoxicated, or fatigued can easily overlook approaching motorcyclists. It is important when these accidents occur to determine who was responsible and how the collision could have been prevented.

There are several questions that must be asked. Did the driver fail to obey the traffic lights at the intersection? Was the motorist talking on the phone or otherwise distracted at the time of the collision? Was the driver’s negligence a contributing factor in the crash? In such cases, financial compensation may be available for the victim’s losses.

A skilled motorcycle accident lawyer can help an injured rider pursue fair compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of earning potential, and other related damages. In cases involving serious injuries, it is crucial for victims to secure quality legal representation to make sure that their rights are protected.
