New IIHS Study Shows Cameras Reduce Red Light Running

By King Law Firm on February 6, 2013 - Comments off

Red Light Traffic CameraAccording to a news release dated January 24, 2013, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), red light running decreased at Arlington, Virginia camera-equipped intersections. The longer into the red light portion of the cycle the more dangerous the running a red light violation becomes, and the risk of accidents resulting in personal injuries increases. Austin motorcycle accident attorney Ray King at the King Law Firm is experienced at securing the compensation you deserve after injuries suffered when a negligent driver crashes into your motorcycle while running a red light.

Camera-induced decreases in running red lights were especially significant for those most dangerous violations occurring one and one half seconds or longer after the light had turned red. According to Anne McCartt, IIHS vice president for research and lead author of the study, “automated enforcement with intersection cameras can directly modify drivers’ behavior.”

Approximately 540 U.S. communities currently use red-light intersection cameras. That number continues to grow as studies continue to demonstrate improvement in safety. Courtesy of a 2011 IIHS study conducted among big cities with red-light cameras in use for some time, the fatal crash rate for red light running has been reduced by 24 percent. All crashes, even those that did not involve the running of red lights, decreased at traffic signal intersections by 17 percent.

Cameras were put in place at four Arlington intersections where heavy traffic is the norm. After a 30-day waiting/informational period $50.00 fines began to be issued for violations caught on camera. Press releases informed the public when ticketing started. Red light violations went down as one year passed from the start date of ticketing.
